Time to Get Ready: Fotografía Social features photographs taken from 1966 to the 1980s by Maria Varela (b.1940) in numerous locations throughout the Deep South, Washington D.C. and New Mexico. Raised Catholic by her Mexican father and Irish mother, Varela first got involved in the Catholic social justice movement by joining the Young Christian Students (YCS). Inspired by social justice activism while at her south-side Chicago Catholic high school, Varela accepted an invitation in 1963 to join the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), a civil rights organization working in the U.S. south. She traveled across the country, urging Catholic students to support the Civil Rights Movement and especially the sit-ins. Later, Varela helped develop a voter literacy program.

Exhibition organized by the National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago. Sponsors: Chicago Park District, Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, Illinois Arts Council Agency and Southwest Airlines.
