Drama therapist Mecca Burns and PVCC’s Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts Brad Stoller introduce the theoretical framework and techniques of Theatre of the Oppressed and its subgenres, practices developed to take on issues of power, privilege and oppression.

First developed in the 1960s by Brazilian theatre director and activist Augusto Boal, the practices explore how the medium of theatre can have a direct impact in communities and the world by examining cultural ideas and discovering how these ideas can create disparity in societies. This type of theatre transforms the “monologue” of a traditional performance into an improvised “dialogue” through a collection of participatory games and exercises.

Burns and Stoller took their training in Theatre of the Oppressed directly from Boal in New York City. They have facilitated workshops across the U.S. and in Uganda, Kenya, Spain and Romania.

No experience is necessary to participate. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, contact Stoller at 434.961.5246 or email bstoller@pvcc.edu.
